X is for eXtracurricular

It is important to show a bit of personality in your personal (professional) account.

Identify a few extracurricular hobbies and interests that you might like to include in your social media profiles. This can be a great way to build relationships with people you know who share similar interests, to meet people online who share those interests and to general improve your knowledge in these extracurricular activities with people who are passionate about them.

Here are some examples:

  • If you are into running you might tweet your running achievements/activities to get moral support. Particularly if you are training for a particular event. You could also share photographs from your more interesting/picturesque routes.
  • If you are into reading you might join an online book club or chat / group.
  • If you are into writing there is a great community of writers online to tap into.
  • If you are interested in a particular topic you might share resources, thoughts and pictures. This could be literally anything you are interested in from food to movies, from architecture to boats.
  • Many clubs and organisations have a social media presence. In the same way that you join the social media community for your job and your networking groups – do this same for your hobbies and interests.
  • If you volunteer you can also talk about your activities online.

Pick one or two to focus on.

Thank you for stopping by during the A to Z Challenge.

Do you include your interests and extracurricular activities as part of your online profile as well?

It is okay if your hobbies are the focus of your social media – after all it is what makes you interesting. Most people use social media in the personal life rather than in their professional life. Provided you have some professional stuff in the mix too.
