J is for… Jobs and opportunities

In real life networking can be a great tool for finding a job or doing research on a role/company. Social media is no different.

Most companies will post job listings on their social media accounts (primarily LinkedIn and Twitter) and may even have dedicated showcase pages or separate career accounts for this purpose depending on the size of the company. You should be utilising this if you are looking for a job. Equally if you are business owner or a manager and you are looking for a new member of staff social media can be a great way to spread the word and find some great candidates out of your pool of connections.

LinkedIn

In the 2017 A to Z Challenge we wrote a more detailed post on using LinkedIn for your job search.

However, there is more to LinkedIn than just the advertised jobs and the job search function. Often individuals in your network will post links to job listings and make requests / advertise one off opportunities that they want to offer their network or need help with.

Some great examples that I have seen in the last week alone have included a request for panel speakers on a particular topic at a high-profile national event, call for submissions for co-authors from academics to contribute to a book that is being published later in the year, maternity cover jobs, internships this summer . The list goes on.

There is a lot out there you just have to tap into it.

Twitter

Twitter while not as career focussed as LinkedIn can be another great tool for finding jobs and other opportunities within your network. If you follow companies that you are interested in (and their careers account) you should get opportunities direct in your feed. Of course the disadvantage of Twitter is that it is much faster than say LinkedIn. But using lists and searching hashtags can make looking for jobs and opportunities more managable and following accounts of companies and their employees can give you a better idea of their corporate culture.

Hashtags that you can use for looking for jobs include:

  • #Hiring
  • #NowHiring
  • #Jobs
  • #Careers
  • #JobPosting
  • #HR
  • #GraduateJobs

If you work in a particular industry be sure to check out the industry specific hashtags as well.  A quick look at some careers accounts for companies in your industry will give you an idea of the hashtags you need to be looking at.

Thank you for stopping by during the A to Z Challenge.

Have you used social media in your job search before?
