O is for… Optimising your Profile

Each of your social media profiles should be consistent and more importantly should be optimised.

For many platforms having a full optimised profiles means:

  • completing every section of your profile
  • including a link
  • including a professional photograph
  • including images
  • creating a URL
  • using keywords and hashtags for SEO purposes.
  • producing high quality content.

However, here are a few extra platform specific tips:

LinkedIn

For LinkedIn it is important to make your Profile as complete as possible. In addition to usual job history and background you should also seek recommendations and endorsements. You should also include your memberships and organisations as well as groups that you are a part of as this will often be where you have met new contacts (networking in real life) and by including these details in your profile you make it easier for people to find the right you online.

Twitter

Your Twitter bio is your one chance to optimise your profile in the eyes of Twitter’s search engine. You only have 160 characters. Therefore most people link to other twitter accounts or key hashtags. However, you should be mindful that these will be clickable (and potentially distracting) and ultimately you may be taking visitors away from your profile straight-away without giving them the opportunity to look at your content.

You should also utilise the “pinned tweet” function. Remember for new users landing on your profile the first thing they will see in your Twitter stream is the pinned tweet. Use your pinned tweet as your “featured story” where possible including a strong visual and a clear call to action.

Instagram

Instagram only gives you one link in your bio.

Therefore it is important to use this wisely. You may only want to direct your traffic/followers to one place and this link will be enough (however you should make sure that you use a trackable link so that you can measure the ROI and know how many website visitors or customers were referred from Instagram).

If you need multiple links you might want to consider a service like Linktree.  This will enable you to have multiple links.

Finally, wherever you link to … make sure it is optimised for mobile as Instagram users will be viewing on their mobile phones and will click away if your website is not optimised for mobile viewing.
