L is for… Links

NTFB Blog Posts - a to z - instagram

You may have realised by now that Instagram is not particularly link friendly. Links in your profile are limited to your specific one website link and links in the body of your bio won’t be clickable. Additionally, links in your captions will also just show as text and not be clickable (although people can copy and paste it is not user friendly).

So how do you get around this? Well there are a number of ways to share links on Instagram as alternatives.

Maximise your Bio Link

One solution (which everyone can use) is to have multiple links in your bio/profile link. While I personally like Linktree due to its simplicity and it has a decent free version. Setting up an account is easy – just go to their website and sign up for an account using your instagram account. You can then add a number of links which means that you are not limited to just a single link. Some of the additional customisations are not available in the freebie service.

Pay for it

If you want to include a clickable link in a specific post you can pay for it as an ad or sponsored post. Again everyone can do this – but you just need to be willing to spend money.

Add a link to your Stories

Unfortunately, you can only use this if you have 10,000 followers or a verified account. But this isn’t much use for regular Instagram users.

If you are lucky enough to meet the minimum follower threshold or have a verified account there should be an option to add a link in the top story deck menu when you post a story.

Use Shoppable Posts

Another option is to use Shoppable Posts. If you have a business account and sell products on facebook you might be eligible for a shopping account on Instagram. Once approved and activated you can sell products on Instagram. You have probably seen some brands already doing this. The posts themselves look like normal posts but when you tap them you will see links to the products and then can click on the links to be taken to the product page.

Third Party and App Solutions

Finally, there are a number of third-party apps and services (free and premium) that offer a range of link extension and landing page services. Here are some you can check out:
