Networking for Students

NTFB Guide: Networking for Students Part III

It is never to early to start networking. If you are a student and haven’t already started practising your networking skills you should definitely be looking into getting involved in networking activities particularly if you are planning to go into a professional or business position after graduating.

Networking can be an important tool for students, as it allows you to build relationships with people in your field of study or career interests.

How to: Get your LinkedIn Profile up to date

Make sure that you have set up a LinkedIn Profile. This is perhaps one of the most important ways to prepare for a networking event, as it can be used as an effective tool for connecting with those you meet afterwards.

Updating your LinkedIn profile is an important part of networking and building your professional presence online. Your profile should be an accurate reflection of your professional and educational achievements so far. Here are a few tips to help you get your LinkedIn profile up to date:

01. Update your profile photo:

Your profile photo is the first thing people see when they visit your LinkedIn profile, so make sure it’s a good one. Choose a professional-looking photo that shows your face clearly and represents your personal brand. Try to have a professional photo taken, or just get a friend or family member to take a photo of you against a white background in work attire to give your profile a professional feel.

02. Write a compelling summary:

Your summary is a chance to introduce yourself and tell your story. It will be useful to write a short statement about yourself, what you are aiming for and some of your interests. Make it compelling and highlight your accomplishments and skills. Use keywords that are relevant to your target industry and profession to help you show up in search results.

03. List your current and past positions:

Even as a student make sure your current and past positions are up-to-date and accurately reflect your experience. For example, include part-time jobs, volunteer and research positions and any positions of responsibility. Include details about your responsibilities and accomplishments for each position.

04. Add your CV:

You can attach documents to your profile, so update your CV and add it to your profile as a formal record of your academic history and any experience you have.

05. Start Connecting with others:

Building your network on LinkedIn is an important part of networking and staying connected with others in your industry. Connect with people you know, such as colleagues, clients, and friends, and consider joining relevant groups or joining the conversation in relevant LinkedIn discussions.

By updating your LinkedIn profile and staying active on the platform, you can build your professional presence online and stay connected with others in your industry. This can help you find new job opportunities, build your professional reputation, and stay informed about the latest industry trends and developments.
