I is for… Invitations

Sending an invitation…

You can ask someone to join your network on LinkedIn by sending them an “invitation” to connect. If they accept your invitation, they’ll become a “1st-degree connection”. You can invite people to connect from: their profile, search results, using their email address, and the people you may know page.

Responding to an invitation..

You should get notified when someone else invites you to connect. When you receive an invitation to connect you can either accept the invitation, reply or ignore. You should only accept invitations from people you know (or who you feel comfortable knowing your personal contact details). If you are not sure why someone is sending you an invitation, you may wish to follow-up by replying to the invitation first (before accepting them) to find out more. Finally, you can “ignore” the invitation if you are not interested in connecting and/or do not know the person. Please note that the person who has sent you the invitation does not get notified when you ignore their invitation (so they may try again). You can no longer “block” people, however when you ignore them you can flag/report them as a person you do not know.

Looking for your invitations? You can find your pending invitations on your “My Network” Page.

Managing your invitations…

In addition to “responding” to invitations you can also “manage” your invitations on your My Network page. Here you review your pending and sent invitations. LinkedIn also imposes a limit in your invitations. However, if you are using LinkedIn responsibly and only connecting with people who you know, you shouldn’t run into any issues.

Once you reach the limit, you can cancel outstanding invitations that you have sent to free up more invitations.
